What Are the Signs Your Boiler Needs Repair?
The most common signs a boiler needs repair are cold radiators, no heat, leaks, pressure problems and banging or gurgling noises. These are the signs worth acting on.
- No heat in some zonesOne area stays cold while others heat normally, which often points to a zone valve, pump or control rather than the boiler.
- The boiler will not fireThe thermostat calls for heat and nothing happens, or the boiler locks out shortly after starting.
- Gurgling or banging pipesAir trapped in the system or poor circulation can produce noise long before it produces a breakdown.
- Pressure keeps changingA gauge that climbs or drops between visits usually means the expansion tank or fill valve needs attention.
- Radiators heat unevenlySome emitters stay lukewarm while others run hot, which points at circulation or balancing rather than capacity.
- Visible leaks or corrosionDamp patches, staining or corrosion around the boiler and piping should be inspected rather than watched.
A gas odor, smoke or an active carbon monoxide alarm requires immediate safety action. For other heating problems, schedule service before continued operation causes further damage.
How Do We Diagnose Boiler Problems?
We look at the boiler and the distribution system together, because they cause similar symptoms.
- Follow the heat. We trace how heat should move through the system from the thermostat call to the emitters, and find where it stops.
- Test the components. Controls, ignition, burners, pumps, zone valves, expansion tank and venting all get tested rather than assumed.
- Read the system. Pressure and temperature readings separate a circulation problem from a control problem from a boiler problem.
- Explain the cause. Air, poor circulation and control faults produce similar symptoms, so we explain which one it actually is before quoting parts.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Boiler?
We evaluate condition, service history, warranty, comfort and the scope of the repair instead of relying on age alone.
An isolated failure on a sound system
A boiler remains a good repair candidate when the failure is isolated and the heat exchanger, venting and distribution system are in sound condition.
Repeated repairs or wider problems
Replacement deserves consideration when major repairs repeat, efficiency has declined, or broader piping and control problems need correcting anyway.
The Four Things We Weigh
Heat exchanger and venting
The condition of the parts that cannot be swapped cheaply is what decides whether a repair is worth making.
How often it has needed us
One failure is a repair. A third call in two winters is a different conversation.
Coverage still in force
Parts or labor coverage can change the arithmetic considerably, so we check before quoting.
What else needs correcting
If piping or controls need work regardless, doing it alongside a replacement often costs less overall.
Practical Hydronic Heating Experience
Gene’s early trade experience included boilers and water heaters, and Pure Comfort has served hydronic systems since 2008.
- Hydronic from the startBoilers were part of the work from Gene's first years in the trade, not an afterthought added later.
- The whole systemCirculation, zoning, venting and controls get considered alongside the boiler cabinet itself.
- In-house techniciansThe technician who arrives works for Pure Comfort. We do not subcontract hydronic work.
- Cause before partsA new component cannot correct poor water flow or a control fault elsewhere, so we find the cause first.
Boiler Components and Connected Controls
We diagnose burners, ignition, pumps, zone valves, expansion tanks, relief components, thermostats, controls and venting on supported boiler systems.
Service availability may depend on the equipment and the parts still available for it. We will tell you plainly if a system is no longer supportable.
Components We Service
Diagnosis determines which of these is actually at fault.
- Burners and ignition systems
- Circulator pumps and zone valves
- Expansion tanks and relief components
- Thermostats and system controls
- Venting and combustion air
- System pressure and circulation
How Much Does Boiler Repair Cost?
Boiler repair starts with a $75 diagnostic ($99 evenings, weekends and holidays), and you approve a flat-rate price before any work starts. After diagnosing the system we explain the recommended work before moving forward. If repair no longer offers good long-term value, we can also provide a free in-home replacement estimate.
Financing may be available for qualifying replacement projects. Promotional terms, rebates and equipment incentives change, so current offers are confirmed during the estimate.
Financing
Projects Over $2,000
Longer terms with interest for lower monthly payments, subject to credit approval. If replacement makes more sense, select Lennox systems qualify for 0% APR during Lennox promotions.
Free
Replacement Estimates
If replacement makes more sense, the in-home estimate is free, in writing and with no obligation.
Hydronic Experience in Older Local Homes
Boilers are more common in the older housing stock across Streamwood and the surrounding suburbs, often alongside piping and controls that have been modified more than once over the years.
That history matters. Recognising an older modification as the cause of a symptom saves replacing a perfectly good component.

Boiler Repair FAQs
Why are some radiators or zones cold?
Air, circulation, zone controls, valves, pumps or system pressure may be involved.
Why is the boiler making banging sounds?
Air, mineral buildup, circulation problems or rapid temperature changes can create noise. The cause should be checked.
Is water near the boiler normal?
No. The source may be a fitting, pump, relief valve, expansion tank or boiler component.
Why does boiler pressure change?
Temperature, fill components, the expansion tank and leaks can affect pressure.
Do you work on boilers you did not install?
Pure Comfort services supported boiler systems, subject to equipment and parts availability.
When is replacement more practical?
Cast-iron boilers can last 30 years or more, so age alone isn’t a reason to replace one. Replace it when the heat exchanger leaks, when parts are no longer made, or when repair bills keep coming. A modern high-efficiency boiler (95% AFUE or higher) can cut gas use noticeably compared with an older boiler running at 70 to 80%. Pure Comfort services and installs hot-water (hydronic) boilers only; we don’t work on steam systems.
How much does boiler repair cost?
Most boiler repairs we do cost $150 to $1,200. A basic pilot cleaning is at the low end. Expansion tanks, zone valves, pressure-reducing valves and pressure relief valves fall in the middle. Thermocouples, relays and circulator pump replacements are usually at the higher end, especially if there are no isolation valves or the whole system has to be bled. You get the exact price before any work starts.
