WORTH CONSIDERING

Where Do Ductless Mini-Splits Work Best?

A mini-split can be a practical solution for spaces the central system was never designed to serve.

  • Additions and bonus rooms
Spaces added after the original construction often sit at the end of an already stretched duct system.
  • Finished attics
Upper-floor conversions gain and lose heat quickly and rarely match the rest of the house on the central system.
  • Garages and workshopsSpaces that need conditioning only part of the time are a good fit for equipment that runs independently.
  • Sunrooms
Large glass areas create loads the central system cannot handle without overcooling the rest of the home.
  • Older homes without ducts
Houses built around radiators or baseboard heat can add cooling without installing a full duct system.
  • The one room that never matchesA space that is always too warm or too cold may be easier to solve with dedicated equipment than with duct modifications.
Safety first!
Ductless is not automatically the best answer for every comfort problem. The room’s load, layout, insulation, available wall space and outdoor-unit location all affect performance and appearance.
Our Process

How Do We Plan a Ductless Installation?

We plan a ductless installation by choosing indoor unit locations, sizing each zone and routing the line set, drain and wiring so the system looks clean and is easy to service. A clean-looking installation should also be easy to maintain and capable of distributing air where people actually use the room.

  1. Calculate the space. We determine the needs of each room rather than sizing from square footage or matching a standard package.
  2. Place the equipment. Indoor-unit locations are chosen to distribute air effectively without creating an awkward focal point in the room.
  3. Plan routing and drainage. Outdoor placement, line-set routing, condensate drainage, electrical requirements and future service access are all mapped before work begins.
  4. Install and verify. Our in-house team completes the refrigeration, electrical and drainage work, then verifies operating pressures, temperature performance, controls and drainage.
Making the Call

Repair an Existing System or Install New Ductless Equipment?

For a room currently served by central HVAC, we also compare duct and airflow corrections before assuming ductless equipment is necessary.

REPAIR IS OFTEN WORTHWHILE

An isolated failure on a working mini-split

When the existing system still serves the space well and the failure is limited, a repair is usually the sensible path.

NEW EQUIPMENT MAY BE BETTER

Repeat failures or a poor original design

When major refrigeration repairs repeat, parts are limited or the system was poorly sized or placed from the start, replacement solves more than another repair.

THE FOUR THINGS WE WEIGH

Every recommendation comes down to these, considered together rather than one at a time.
01 / COST

What the repair costs today

The price of the fix measured against a properly designed replacement for the space.

02 / CONDITION

The state of the equipment

Age, repair history and whether parts remain available for the system.

03 / DESIGN

Sizing and placement

Whether the original installation was sized and located correctly for how the room is actually used.

04 / ALTERNATIVES

Duct corrections

For rooms on the central system, whether airflow or duct work would solve the problem more simply.

Why Homeowners Choose Us

Design Details That Protect Comfort and Appearance

Pure Comfort has installed ductless systems throughout the Streamwood area since 2008, combining careful planning with attention to the finished space.

  • Placement planned first
Indoor-head location is chosen for airflow and appearance together, not wherever the line set runs most easily.
  • Clean exterior work
Visible line covers, outdoor-unit support and drainage are handled so the finished job looks intentional.
  • Certified experience
NATE-certified, EPA-certified and Lennox Premier Dealer experience on the refrigeration and electrical work.
  • Service access considered
We plan for filter cleaning and future service rather than creating a system that is difficult to maintain.
WHAT WE INSTALL

Single-Zone and Multi-Zone Mini-Splits

Single-zone systems connect one indoor unit to one outdoor unit. Multi-zone equipment can serve several rooms, but each zone still needs its own load and placement evaluation.

Indoor styles, capacity, low-temperature performance, controls and filtration features vary by system. Pure Comfort can explain which options fit the space without oversizing equipment.

WHAT WE COMPARE FOR YOU

The right configuration depends on the rooms being served.

Common Questions

Ductless Installation FAQs

Most of our ductless installs are one indoor head with one outdoor unit. We also install plenty of 2-, 3-, 4- and even 5-zone systems, where one outdoor unit serves several rooms and each room has its own temperature control. Indoor units come in wall-mount, ceiling cassette and other styles to fit the room.

Most modern mini-splits are heat pumps that provide both, but cold-weather capability varies by model.

Placement should support even airflow, practical line routing, drainage and future service access.

Yes. Cooling and dehumidification produce condensate that must be routed correctly.

Usually. The equipment needs a circuit and disconnect that match its requirements.

In some homes, yes. In others, it works better as a targeted solution. We compare the options during the evaluation.

Rooms the central system can’t keep comfortable: additions, garages, finished attics, sunrooms and basements. A multi-zone outdoor unit can serve several rooms, and each room gets its own temperature control.

A single-zone ductless mini-split starts at around $4,500 installed. The price goes up with the length of the refrigerant line set, the number of zones, and the brand and model. Our primary ductless brand is Bosch, the Max series. Qualifying ductless mini-splits are also eligible for a ComEd instant discount of up to $1,000, and we check the current amounts with every quote.

Rinse or vacuum the indoor unit filters every month or two, and have the system professionally serviced once a year. A yearly service cleans the coils and drain line and checks the refrigerant and electrical connections. Call (708) 515-4822 to schedule.

Ductless Mini-Split vs Central Air Compared

A ductless mini-split is the better fit for rooms without ductwork, like additions, garages and finished attics, while central air is usually the better value for cooling a whole home that already has ducts.
