When Should You Call for Emergency HVAC Help?

Call right away for no heat in freezing weather or no cooling in dangerous heat; if you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the home and call 911 or Nicor Gas first. Call when you see.

  • No heat in extreme cold
A house losing heat during a hard freeze puts both the household and the plumbing at risk.
  • No cooling in dangerous heat
Extended indoor heat is a health risk, particularly for older adults, young children and anyone with medical conditions.
  • Smoke from the equipmentShut the system down and call. Continued operation can turn a component failure into something far worse.
  • Repeated breaker trips
A breaker that keeps tripping may signal an electrical or equipment problem and should not be reset over and over.
  • A loud boom or bang
A sudden loud noise from the equipment means it should be shut off until it can be assessed.
  • Major leakingWater reaching electrical components or causing active damage needs the system off and a call for guidance.
Safety first!
A gas odor or active carbon monoxide alarm is different from a normal repair. Leave the area, avoid ignition sources and follow utility or emergency guidance from a safe location before arranging HVAC service.
Our Process

What Happens During an Emergency Service Call?

We look for the cause rather than repeatedly resetting equipment or replacing the first suspicious part.

  1. Understand the symptom. The first priority is understanding what the system is doing and whether it should remain off until we arrive.
  2. Follow the sequence. On site, we follow the sequence of operation to find exactly where the system stops behaving correctly.
  3. Test the relevant systems. Electrical, safety, combustion, refrigeration or airflow components are tested based on what the equipment is doing.
  4. Explain the options. Once the system is assessed, we explain what can be repaired now and whether any follow-up work is needed.
Making the Call

Emergency Repair or System Replacement?

During an emergency we restore heat or cooling with a repair whenever that is safe and sensible, and explain replacement options without pressure. An urgent call should not remove the homeowner’s ability to make an informed decision.

MOST CALLS ARE REPAIRS

No-heat and no-cooling failures

Many urgent calls can be resolved through repair, restoring heat or cooling without a larger project.

REPLACEMENT IS A SEPARATE TALK

A major failure on aging equipment

When a significant failure affects equipment in poor condition with a history of breakdowns, replacement becomes its own discussion.

HOW WE HANDLE THE ORDER OF THINGS

Immediate problem first, long-term decisions second.
01 / STABILIZE

Address the immediate problem

The first goal is restoring safe operation or making the equipment safe to leave off.

02 / DIAGNOSE

Find the actual cause

Testing identifies what failed rather than guessing under time pressure.

03 / EXPLAIN

Cover the repair

You get the recommended work explained before it moves forward, even on an urgent call.

04 / PLAN

Longer-term options later

Replacement conversations happen when they are relevant, not as pressure during a failure.

Common Questions

Emergency HVAC FAQs

Check the thermostat and breaker once. If the system will not operate or appears unsafe, call for availability and protect the home from freezing conditions.

Leave the house right away. Don’t flip light switches, use your phone, start a car or light anything while you’re near the smell. Once you’re a safe distance away, call Nicor Gas at 888-642-6748 or 911, and stay out until they say it’s safe. After the utility has made it safe, call Pure Comfort at 708-515-4822 to find and repair the cause.

Get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911. If anyone has a headache, dizziness or nausea, tell the dispatcher. Don’t go back in until the fire department clears the house. Then have us inspect the furnace, water heater and venting before you use them again. A cracked heat exchanger or a blocked flue can cause carbon monoxide.

No. Repeated trips may indicate an electrical or equipment problem.

Shut the system off if water is reaching electrical components or causing active damage, then call for guidance.

We can’t promise an exact time, but for emergency calls we typically arrive within 1 to 3 hours. Call 708-515-4822 any time, day or night, including weekends and holidays. The diagnostic is $99 on evenings, weekends and holidays.

No heat when it’s below freezing, any gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm, water leaking from equipment onto finished floors, a burning or electrical smell, or no cooling for someone medically vulnerable during a heat wave. For anything else, you can book online for the next available time.
