Why is my furnace running without producing heat?

The cause may involve the thermostat, ignition sequence, gas components, safety controls or airflow. Testing shows where the heating cycle stops.

Why does my furnace start and shut off?

Short cycling can come from restricted airflow, overheating, flame-sensing problems, controls or improper sizing. It needs diagnosis before a part is selected.

Is a burning smell normal?

A brief dusty smell can occur at the start of the season. Smoke, a strong electrical odor or a persistent burning smell calls for shutdown and inspection.

Should I keep resetting the breaker?

My furnace is making a new noise. Should I shut it off?

Turn it off and call us if you hear loud banging at startup, screeching or grinding, or anything paired with a burning or gas smell. Those can mean delayed ignition, a failing motor or a cracked component. A soft click or hum at startup is normal. A new rattle is usually a loose panel or ductwork and can wait for a normal appointment.

What should I do if I smell gas near my furnace?

Leave the home right away, avoid light switches and phones inside, and call Nicor Gas at 1-888-642-6748 or 911 from outside. Do not try to relight the furnace. Once the gas company says it is safe, call us at 708-515-4822 to inspect and repair the furnace.
