The Basics
Why Homes Need Planned Ventilation
Modern homes are often built or improved to reduce uncontrolled air leakage. That can help with energy use, but it may also allow odors, moisture and indoor contaminants to linger when fresh-air exchange is limited.
A whole-home ventilation system creates a more controlled path for bringing in outdoor air and exhausting stale air. The right approach should account for the home’s construction, occupancy, HVAC equipment and seasonal humidity.
The Options
Common Ventilation Approaches
Exhaust Ventilation
Exhaust-focused systems remove indoor air and allow replacement air to enter through available openings or planned inlets.
Supply Ventilation
Supply-focused systems introduce outdoor air into the home, often after filtration, while indoor air leaves through natural or mechanical exhaust paths.
Balanced Ventilation
Balanced systems use dedicated supply and exhaust airflow. Heat-recovery and energy-recovery ventilators can transfer some heat, and in certain designs moisture, between the outgoing and incoming air streams.
The best approach depends on the house and should not be selected from the equipment label alone.
Is It For You?
When Whole-Home Ventilation May Help
Ventilation may be worth evaluating when the home feels stuffy, odors linger, windows rarely open or recent air-sealing improvements have reduced natural air exchange. It can also support broader indoor air quality planning when filtration alone does not address the need for outdoor air.
Moisture complaints should be diagnosed carefully because ventilation can help in some conditions and make humidity harder to manage in others.
Six Things That Matter
Features to Compare

Getting It Right
Fresh Air Needs a Plan, Not Just a Fan
Choosing Ventilation for the Climate and Home
More outdoor air is not automatically better. The ventilation rate must be appropriate for the home, and the system must account for cold winter air, humid summer conditions and the heating and cooling equipment already in place.
Pure Comfort looks at the comfort concern, house layout, available duct paths, humidity conditions and HVAC operation before recommending how ventilation should be introduced and controlled.
Installation and HVAC Integration
Whole-home ventilation requires planned intake and exhaust locations, sealed duct connections, accessible filters and controls that coordinate with the HVAC system when applicable. Exterior terminations should be positioned to reduce the chance of recirculating exhaust or drawing in unwanted contaminants.
Airflow should be measured and balanced during commissioning. Drainage and frost-control requirements must also be addressed for systems that recover heat or energy.
Why Homeowners Choose Us
Why Choose Pure Comfort for Ventilation Guidance
1
Evaluates ventilation together with humidity, filtration and HVAC operation
2
Reviews duct paths, airflow and control compatibility
3
Uses in-house HVAC installation crews
4
Tests system operation instead of assuming factory settings fit every home
It creates a controlled way to remove stale indoor air and introduce outdoor air. Depending on the design, it may also filter incoming air and recover some heat or energy from the outgoing air.
What is the difference between an HRV and an ERV?
Both exchange heat between incoming and outgoing air streams. An energy-recovery ventilator is also designed to transfer some moisture, while a heat-recovery ventilator primarily transfers heat.
Will ventilation solve every indoor air quality problem?
No. Ventilation addresses air exchange, while filtration, source control, duct conditions and humidity management address different parts of indoor air quality.
Can ventilation increase indoor humidity?
It can under some outdoor conditions if the system is oversized, unbalanced or operated without considering the season. Proper selection and control are important in the Chicago-area climate.
