What Are the Signs a Water Heater Needs Service?
Call for water heater service when you have no hot water, not enough hot water, rusty water, a leak, a pilot that will not stay lit or popping noises from the tank.
- No hot water at allDepending on the equipment, the cause may involve ignition, electrical elements, controls, fuel or power.
- Hot water runs out quicklyDemand, capacity, sediment, controls or a failed heating component can all shorten the supply.
- Temperature changes unexpectedlyWater that swings hot and cold points to control, element or sediment conditions that need testing.
- Rumbling from the tankSediment and boiling conditions can create noise, but the system should be evaluated before assuming the cause.
- Ignition or reset troubleA unit that will not stay lit or needs repeated control resets has a fault that will not resolve on its own.
- Water near the equipmentThe source may be a fitting, valve or connection that can be repaired, or the tank itself, which usually cannot.
If the storage tank itself is leaking, shut off the water supply when it is safe to do so and plan for replacement. A gas odor requires immediate safety action before normal repair service.
How Do We Diagnose Water Heater Problems?
The first job is separating a repairable component failure from a condition that calls for replacement.
- Identify the equipment. We confirm the type of water heater, its fuel and how it is vented before testing anything.
- Find the water source. We determine whether water is coming from the tank, piping, relief valve or another nearby source, because the answer changes everything.
- Test the operating components. Controls, burner or elements, venting, gas or electrical operation and temperature settings are all evaluated.
- Explain the options. You get a clear picture of whether the problem is the appliance, the installation or the way hot water is being used in the home.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Water Heater?
Pure Comfort compares the repair scope, equipment condition, hot-water needs and available replacement paths. You receive the options before deciding.
An intact tank with a failed component
When the storage tank is sound and a supported part has failed, a repair typically restores normal hot water at a sensible cost.
A leaking tank or compounding problems
A leaking storage tank calls for replacement, and corrosion, repeated repairs and poor recovery occurring together point the same way.
THE FOUR THINGS WE WEIGH
What the repair costs today
The price of the fix measured against a replacement that also updates capacity or venting.
Tank and connections
Whether the storage tank is intact and what the fittings, valves and venting look like.
Does it still fit the household
Whether capacity and recovery still match how the home uses hot water.
Expected remaining service life
How many more years the unit can reasonably deliver after the repair.

Water Heater Repair FAQs
Why do I have no hot water?
The cause depends on the equipment and may involve ignition, electrical elements, controls, fuel or power.
Why does hot water run out quickly?
Demand, capacity, sediment, controls or a failed heating component may be involved.
Is a leaking water heater repairable?
A leaking fitting or valve may be repairable. A leaking storage tank usually requires replacement.
Why is the tank rumbling?
Sediment and boiling conditions can create noise, but the system should be evaluated before assuming the cause.
Do you repair power-vent and tankless systems?
Pure Comfort services supported equipment, subject to condition and parts availability.
When should I replace rather than repair?
Tank leakage, corrosion, repeated repairs and poor recovery can make replacement the better value.
How long does a water heater last, and should I flush it?
About 8 to 12 years for a tank and 15 to 20 years for a tankless unit. Hard water, common across the Northwest Suburbs, shortens that: sediment builds up and the tank wears out faster. A yearly flush helps. We charge $149 to flush a standard tank and $265 to descale a tankless unit.
How much does water heater repair cost?
Most tank water heater repairs we do cost $150 to $700. Cleaning the pilot or replacing a thermocouple is at the low end. Replacing the pilot assembly or the gas control valve is at the higher end. If the part is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, you pay for labor only.
