Heat Pumps Built for Illinois Winters

Today’s cold-climate heat pumps are a practical choice for Chicagoland homes, both on their own and paired with a gas furnace. A heat pump cools in summer and moves heat into your home in winter, using far less energy than electric resistance heat. Pure Comfort Heating and Cooling installs, repairs and maintains heat pumps throughout Streamwood, Elgin, Palatine and the Northwest Suburbs.

Dual fuel: the best of both

Most of our heat pump installations are dual-fuel systems. The heat pump handles heating on mild days, and the gas furnace takes over once it gets colder, usually at a balance point around 35 to 40 degrees. The system switches automatically, so you get efficient heat most of the season and strong, steady heat on the coldest nights.

Heat pumps we install

For dual-fuel systems we typically install Lennox EL19KPV and EL21KLV variable-capacity heat pumps, or the EL18KSLV slim side-discharge model where space is tight. For rooms without ductwork, we install Bosch Max Performance ductless heat pumps that keep heating down to -22 degrees. See our Lennox heat pump lineup for a full comparison.

What a heat pump costs

Adding a heat pump and matching coil to an existing furnace typically costs $6,000 to $11,000. A heat pump with a new air handler typically runs $8,500 to $15,000 or more. Every installation includes a load calculation and a check of your ductwork and electrical service. Ask us about current utility rebates when you request an estimate.

Heat pump repair and maintenance

Because a heat pump runs in both summer and winter, it benefits from maintenance twice a year. We check refrigerant charge, the reversing valve, defrost controls, electrical parts and airflow. Common repairs include capacitors, defrost boards and sensors, and our trucks carry the parts for most of them. Same-day emergency service is available.

What Is Included With a New Heat Pump Installation?

  • Load calculation and balance-point setup so the heat pump and furnace hand off at the right outdoor temperature, usually around 35 to 40 degrees.
  • Ductwork and electrical check to confirm airflow and panel capacity before equipment is chosen.
  • Matched indoor coil or air handler, new line set as needed, and a village permit where required.
  • Pressure test and deep vacuum before charging with R-454B refrigerant.
  • Controls programmed for dual fuel, defrost and auxiliary heat, then tested in both heating and cooling.
  • Walkthrough and warranty registration, backed by our own labor warranty.

Heat Pump Questions

Common Heat Pump Questions From Local Homeowners

Yes. Today’s cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing, and Bosch ductless models keep heating down to -22 degrees. Most of our customers pair a heat pump with a gas furnace so the furnace takes over on the coldest days.

A dual-fuel system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump heats the home on mild days, and the furnace takes over automatically when it gets colder, usually around 35 to 40 degrees. You get efficient heat most of the season and strong heat on the coldest nights.

Not always. Many furnaces from the last 10 to 15 years can work with a heat pump if the blower and controls are compatible. We check your furnace, ductwork and electrical service during the estimate and tell you whether it can stay.

Twice a year, because it runs in both heating and cooling season. Spring and fall visits check the refrigerant charge, reversing valve, defrost controls, electrical parts and airflow.

That is usually the defrost cycle. Every so often the heat pump briefly reverses to melt frost off the outdoor coil, which can release steam and make a whooshing sound. It is normal unless the unit is covered in thick ice or never defrosts.

It depends on your gas and electric rates and the efficiency of your current system. A dual-fuel system lets the controls use whichever fuel is cheaper at each outdoor temperature. We walk through the expected operating cost during your estimate.

Heat Pump Options Compared

A single-stage heat pump paired with a gas furnace is the budget dual-fuel option, a two-stage heat pump adds comfort, and a variable-capacity cold-climate heat pump gives the highest efficiency through Illinois winters. We install the full Lennox line.
