Common AC Problems in Glen Ellyn Homes
Glen Ellyn’s older homes were built long before central air, so many have AC added through an attic air handler, small ducts or ductless units. Upstairs rooms running warm, attic condensate pumps that fail and clogged secondary drain pans are common summer calls in those homes.
In the 1970s and 1980s two-story homes, original ductwork and limited return air leave the upstairs warm, and many air conditioners are 15 to 25 years old. Capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors and coil leaks are the repairs we make most often here. The photos on this page are from air conditioner and ductless mini-split installs our team recently finished in Glen Ellyn.
How a Glen Ellyn AC Repair Visit Works
We start at the thermostat and follow the cooling sequence, test capacitors, contactors, motors and connections under load, then measure refrigerant conditions, temperature split, drainage and airflow. We find the root cause before anything gets replaced.
You get a flat-rate price before work begins. Our trucks carry capacitors, contactors and fan motors, so many AC repairs are finished the same day. We repair all major brands, including systems installed by other contractors, and for most brands we handle the manufacturer parts warranty claim so you pay labor only.
Repair or Replace Your Glen Ellyn Air Conditioner?
A central air conditioner lasts about 12 to 17 years here with yearly maintenance. If yours is past 12 years and needs a compressor, coil or refrigerant leak repair, we give you both the repair price and a replacement price. R-22 systems are especially costly to recharge, since that refrigerant has been out of production since 2020.
The $5,000 rule is a quick check: multiply the age by the repair price, and if it is over $5,000, replacement is worth pricing. Replacement estimates are free, and if a heat pump is a fit for your home, ComEd offers instant discounts through our heat pump-trained technicians.

Glen Ellyn AC Repair FAQs
How much does AC repair cost in Glen Ellyn?
The diagnostic is $75, or $99 evenings, weekends and holidays. Most AC repairs cost $150 to $700. Capacitors and contactors are at the low end, while fan motors, refrigerant leaks and coil work cost more. You approve a flat-rate price before any work starts.
How fast can you get to Glen Ellyn?
Our Streamwood shop is about 16 miles from Glen Ellyn, roughly 30 to 35 minutes via Gary Avenue in normal traffic. We answer 24/7 and offer same-day AC repair when a truck is open.
Is a ductless mini split a good choice for an older Glen Ellyn home?
Often, yes. A mini split cools an upper floor, finished attic or addition without new ductwork, which helps in homes with radiator heat or where running ducts would mean opening walls.
Water is coming through my ceiling under the attic unit. What happened?
Usually a clogged condensate drain or a failed condensate pump, sometimes with a full secondary pan. Turn the system off and call us. We clear the drain, check the safety switch and find out why it backed up.
Why is my upstairs so much hotter than the main floor?
In two-story homes, heat rises and upstairs rooms are often farther from the air handler with limited return air. Return-air changes, balancing or zoning usually help more than a bigger air conditioner.
Can you still repair an R-22 air conditioner?
Yes, but R-22 is no longer produced, so recharging is expensive. If an R-22 system has a leak, we give you the repair price and a replacement price so you can compare.
