Choosing a New Air Conditioner for a Des Plaines Home
Many Des Plaines homes from the 1950s and 1960s had central air added years after they were built, using ducts sized for heating. That makes sizing the most important part of an AC replacement. An oversized condenser on small ducts runs loud, short-cycles and leaves the house clammy, so we size from a load calculation and match the coil to the furnace. Many systems here are 15 to 25 years old, and some still run on R-22, so a leak is often the point where replacing beats recharging. Cape Cods and story-and-a-half homes have upstairs bedrooms with small ducts or none, and heat collects under the roof. For those rooms, we may quote a ductless unit upstairs along with the central system.
AC Installation in Des Plaines: How It Works
It starts with a free visit to your Des Plaines home. We measure the house and ductwork, check the electrical service and condenser location and run a load calculation, then give you written Good, Better and Best Lennox options with rebates and financing. On install day, our own crew recovers the old refrigerant, sets the new condenser and matching indoor coil, replaces or flushes the refrigerant lines as needed, pulls a deep vacuum and charges the system by measurement. We check airflow and temperature split before we leave and register the warranty.
Repair or Replace Your Des Plaines Air Conditioner?
Most central air conditioners last 12 to 17 years here. Replacement usually makes more sense when the compressor or coil fails on an older unit, the system still uses R-22 refrigerant, or repairs keep coming back. If your Des Plaines AC is younger and the problem is a capacitor, contactor or fan motor, a repair is often the better value, and our Des Plaines AC repair team can diagnose it for $75.

Des Plaines AC Replacement FAQs
How much does a new AC cost in Des Plaines?
As of October 2026, a new air conditioner from Pure Comfort costs $5,000 to $9,000 installed in Des Plaines, including the matching indoor coil. Tonnage limited by heating-sized ducts, coil matching and ductless units for Cape Cod upstairs rooms drive most AC prices in Des Plaines. Replacing the AC and furnace together costs $8,000 to $19,000, and ComEd rebates can apply if you choose a qualifying heat pump instead.
How do I get a free AC replacement estimate or quote in Des Plaines?
Call (708) 515-4822 or book online. We visit your Des Plaines home, measure the house and ductwork, run a load calculation and give you written Good, Better and Best options with rebates and financing. The estimate is free, and there is no pressure to decide on the spot.
Do I need a permit to replace an air conditioner in Des Plaines?
Where a permit is required, we confirm the City of Des Plaines’ current requirements and pull the permit, or help you file it in towns where the homeowner applies, then schedule any required inspection.
Is a two-stage or variable-speed AC worth it in Des Plaines?
In Des Plaines ranches with small, heating-sized ducts, a two-stage AC often pays off because it runs at low speed most of the time, which suits the ducts and removes more humidity. Upstairs Cape Cod rooms may still need a ductless unit.
How long does AC replacement take?
Most air conditioner replacements in Des Plaines take one day, including the new condenser, matching indoor coil, refrigerant lines when needed and startup testing. Adding zoning or a ductless head upstairs can add a day.
Is there an AC installation company near me in Des Plaines?
Yes. Pure Comfort is based in Streamwood, about 35 minutes from Des Plaines, and installs air conditioners across 60016 and 60018. We are a Lennox Premier Dealer with NATE-certified technicians, and our own crews do every install.
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time in Des Plaines?
If both are about 15 years old or older, replacing them together usually saves on labor and lets us match the new furnace blower to the new AC coil for better efficiency. A furnace and AC replaced together typically runs $8,000 to $19,000 installed. If one system is much newer, we can replace only the one that needs it.
