When Should You Replace Your Air Conditioner?
Replace your air conditioner when it can no longer keep up through a normal summer, needs a major repair like a compressor or coil, still uses R-22 refrigerant or is about 15 years old or more. These are the signs worth a closer look:
- Cooling has become unreliableA system that works some days and not others is usually reacting to a condition that will not resolve on its own.
- Repairs keep repeatingA second or third service call in the same season points to broader wear rather than a single failed component.
- Humidity is not controlledA house that feels damp even at the setpoint often reflects sizing, staging or airflow problems the equipment cannot overcome.
- The system runs constantlyAn AC that never reaches the setpoint in hot weather is working past its practical capacity for the home.
- A major refrigeration failureWhen an expensive refrigeration component fails, the repair cost has to be weighed against what the system can still deliver.
- Older refrigerantEquipment using a phased-out refrigerant can face rising service costs and limited supply over time.
These signs do not automatically require a new unit. Pure Comfort tests the system and considers airflow and duct conditions before recommending replacement.
How Do We Design and Install an AC System?
We size every AC with a load calculation, match the indoor coil and blower, and verify refrigerant charge, airflow and temperature split before we leave. Here is how we plan and complete a cooling replacement.
- Evaluate the home. We review the cooling load, existing indoor equipment, duct capacity, return air, filter area, electrical circuit and thermostat before selecting an outdoor unit.
- Protect and prepare. Our in-house team protects the home, removes the old equipment and makes clean mechanical and electrical connections.
- Follow refrigeration procedure. That includes nitrogen-supported brazing where appropriate, pressure testing and a measured evacuation before charging and startup.
- Commission the system. We confirm airflow, temperature performance, electrical operation, drainage and controls, then document how the installation is operating.
Should You Repair or Replace Your AC?
We compare both paths using condition, repair history, warranty, refrigerant, comfort and expected service life.
Equipment in good condition that still fits the home
An isolated repair makes sense when the system is sound, properly sized and still meeting the home’s cooling and humidity needs.
A major failure paired with recurring service
Poor humidity control, mismatched components or a system that was never sized correctly point toward replacement rather than another repair.
The Four Things We Weigh
What the repair costs today
The price of the fix measured against what that same money contributes toward a properly designed replacement.
The state of the equipment
Repair history, component match, refrigerant type and how the system handles a hot, humid stretch.
Coverage that is still active
Remaining parts or labor coverage can make repair the clear answer, so we confirm it before quoting.
As a Lennox Premier Dealer, we register your air conditioner warranty and add Lennox ComfortShield extended labor coverage of up to 10 years.
Expected remaining service life
How many more seasons the system can reasonably deliver, and whether the furnace should be replaced at the same time.
Installation Quality You Can Measure
Pure Comfort is a family-owned Streamwood company founded in 2008. New equipment cannot deliver its rated performance when the surrounding system is wrong, so we address both.
- Owner-involved designGene remains involved in system design and quality control on replacement projects.
- In-house installersOur own trained crews complete the refrigeration, electrical and mechanical work on your home.
- Certified experienceNATE-certified, EPA-certified and Lennox Premier Dealer experience on every installation.
- Measured startupWe evaluate airflow, return-air capacity, filter sizing, breaker requirements and ductwork, then document startup readings.
Compare Cooling Options for the Home
Air conditioners are available in different capacities, efficiency levels, sound ratings and operating stages. The right choice depends on the cooling load, indoor equipment, controls, duct system and what matters most to your household.
Pure Comfort primarily installs Lennox equipment and can compare single-stage, multi-stage and variable-capacity options without turning the conversation into a model-number exercise.
WHAT WE COMPARE FOR YOU
The equipment decision comes down to a handful of practical differences.
- Cooling capacity matched to the home's actual load
- Single-stage, multi-stage and variable-capacity operation
- Efficiency level and expected operating cost
- Sound rating and outdoor unit placement
- Humidity control and indoor coil match
- Thermostat and control compatibility
What Financing, Rebates and Warranties Are Available?
Yes. Qualifying AC replacements can use 0% APR Lennox promotional financing on select systems or longer terms with interest on projects over $2,000, plus Lennox manufacturer warranties. Current manufacturer promotions, utility rebates and tax incentives can change, so we confirm what applies to the equipment and installation before you decide.
Equipment is registered when applicable. Parts and labor coverage depends on the selected model, manufacturer requirements and warranty option.

Local Design Experience Matters
Pure Comfort works in Streamwood-area homes with a wide range of layouts, insulation levels and duct systems. Older houses often have return-air or filter limitations, while previous replacements may have repeated the old capacity without verifying the home’s current load.
Our local installation experience helps us design around the actual house and address conditions that would otherwise limit comfort, dehumidification and equipment life.

AC Installation FAQs
How is AC size determined?
The home’s cooling load, windows, insulation, orientation, ductwork and airflow capacity all matter. Square footage alone is not enough.
Can an air conditioner be too large?
Yes. Oversizing can create short cycles, uneven temperatures and poor humidity control.
Can I replace only the outdoor unit?
Sometimes, but the indoor coil, furnace or air handler, controls and refrigerant must be compatible. We evaluate the complete system.
How long does installation take?
An AC-only replacement usually takes 4 to 6 hours. If your AC fails in peak season, we can typically install a new system within 1 to 2 days.
Will a new AC lower my bills?
It may improve efficiency, but actual results also depend on sizing, airflow, insulation, thermostat settings and weather.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. Pure Comfort provides free in-home replacement estimates.
How much does a new central air conditioner cost?
A new AC from Pure Comfort costs $5,000 to $9,000 fully installed, including the matching indoor coil. The low end is a 1.5-ton system; the high end is a 5-ton high-efficiency system. A complete furnace and AC replacement costs $8,000 to $19,000.
What SEER2 rating do I need in Illinois?
Illinois is in the federal North region. The minimum for a new split central AC is 13.4 SEER2, and 14.3 SEER2 for a heat pump. For Chicago-area homes, we usually recommend 14 to 18 SEER2. Higher ratings cost more upfront but use less electricity, and variable-speed systems also remove more humidity.
Do I need to replace my furnace coil when I replace my AC?
In almost every case, yes. The indoor coil has to match the outdoor unit and the new refrigerant for the system to reach its rated efficiency and keep its warranty. A mismatched coil can cool poorly and void the Lennox warranty. We install matched, AHRI-certified systems.
How often should a new air conditioner be serviced?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the cooling season. A yearly tune-up keeps a new AC running efficiently and catches small problems, like a weak capacitor, before a hot day. Both of our Comfort Club plans include an annual AC tune-up and an annual furnace tune-up, starting at $15 a month.

Single-Stage vs Two-Stage vs Variable-Capacity AC Compared
A single-stage AC is the lowest upfront cost, a two-stage AC runs quieter and pulls out more humidity, and a variable-capacity AC gives the most even cooling and lowest bills. We install the full Lennox line and repair all major brands.
| Option | Efficiency | Cooling stages | Outdoor sound | Best for | Example models |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-stage | Up to 13.4 to 17 SEER2 | Single-stage | As low as 72 to 73 dB | Budget replacements and rentals | Lennox ML14KC1, EL16KC1 |
| Two-stage | Up to 18 SEER2 | Two-stage | As low as 73 dB | Better humidity control at a value price | Lennox ML17KC2 |
| Variable-capacity | Up to 19.5 to 26 SEER2 | Variable-capacity | As low as 58 to 67 dB | The most even cooling, best humidity control and lowest bills | Lennox EL18KCV, EL22KCV, SL25KCV |
