AC Not Cooling? Common AC Problems in Hoffman Estates Homes
In the older 60169 neighborhoods, many ranches and split-levels had central air added after they were built, so supply and return ducts are small for cooling. Those systems often struggle to keep bedrooms comfortable on humid days, and we check airflow before adding refrigerant or replacing parts.
The larger two-story homes in 60192 bring a different set of problems: hot upstairs bedrooms, zoned systems with dampers that stick, and air conditioners now 15 to 20 years old. Capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors and evaporator coil leaks are the most common repairs we make in Hoffman Estates. The photos on this page are from a Lennox air conditioner and furnace replacement we recently finished in Hoffman Estates.
How a Hoffman Estates AC Repair Visit Works
We start at the thermostat and follow the cooling sequence, test capacitors, contactors, motors and connections under load, then measure refrigerant conditions, temperature split, drainage and airflow. We find the root cause before anything gets replaced.
You get a flat-rate price before work begins. Our trucks carry capacitors, contactors and fan motors, so many AC repairs are finished the same day. We repair all major brands, including systems installed by other contractors, and for most brands we handle the manufacturer parts warranty claim so you pay labor only.
Repair or Replace Your Hoffman Estates Air Conditioner?
A central air conditioner lasts about 12 to 17 years here with yearly maintenance. If yours is past 12 years and needs a compressor, coil or refrigerant leak repair, we give you both the repair price and a replacement price. R-22 systems are especially costly to recharge, since that refrigerant has been out of production since 2020.
The $5,000 rule is a quick check: multiply the age by the repair price, and if it is over $5,000, replacement is worth pricing. Replacement estimates are free, and if a heat pump is a fit for your home, ComEd offers instant discounts through our heat pump-trained technicians.

Hoffman Estates AC Repair FAQs
How much does AC repair cost in Hoffman Estates?
The diagnostic is $75, or $99 evenings, weekends and holidays. Most AC repairs cost $150 to $700. Capacitors and contactors are at the low end, while fan motors, refrigerant leaks and coil work cost more. You approve a flat-rate price before any work starts.
Why is my upstairs so much hotter than the main floor?
In two-story homes, heat rises and upstairs rooms are often farther from the air handler with limited return air. Zoning, return-air changes or balancing usually help more than a bigger air conditioner. We measure before recommending anything.
My zoned system cools one floor but not the other. What is wrong?
A zone damper may be stuck, or the zone board or a thermostat may have failed. We test the zoning system along with the air conditioner.
How fast can you get to Hoffman Estates?
Our Streamwood shop is about 7 miles away, roughly 15 minutes in normal traffic. We answer 24/7 and offer same-day AC repair when a truck is open.
Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old air conditioner?
If a 15-year-old system needs a compressor, coil or refrigerant leak repair, replacement is often the better value. We give you both prices so you can decide.
Can you still repair an R-22 air conditioner?
Yes, but R-22 is no longer produced, so recharging is expensive. If an R-22 system has a leak, we give you the repair price and a replacement price.
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
The usual causes are a clogged filter, a frozen indoor coil, a failed capacitor, a dirty outdoor coil or low refrigerant from a leak. If you see ice, turn the system off and let it thaw, then replace the filter. If it still is not cooling, call us. Diagnosis is $75 ($99 evenings, weekends and holidays), with a flat-rate price before any repair.
