WORTH CONSIDERING

When Should a Tank Water Heater Be Replaced?

Replace a tank water heater when it leaks from the tank, runs out of hot water much faster than it used to, makes popping or rumbling noises or is 8 to 12 years old.

  • The tank is leaking
A leaking storage tank usually cannot be repaired and calls for replacement before it causes water damage.
  • Hot water runs out sooner
A shorter supply than the household is used to can reflect sediment, a failed component or capacity that no longer fits.
  • Recovery has become slowWhen the tank takes noticeably longer to reheat, the burner, elements or overall condition may be declining.
  • Repairs keep repeating
Multiple service calls on the same water heater change the value of spending more on the existing unit.
  • Rust-colored water
Discolored hot water can indicate internal corrosion that will not improve over time.
  • Rumbling or visible corrosionNoise from sediment and corrosion at fittings or the jacket are both signs of an aging system.
Safety first!
A failed control or heating component may still be repairable. A leaking storage tank, however, usually requires replacement. Pure Comfort checks the equipment before recommending a new unit.
Our Process

How Do We Install a Tank Water Heater?

We install a tank water heater by sizing it to your household, checking the venting, gas and water connections, and hauling the old tank away. The right equipment depends on how the household actually uses hot water, not just what was there before.

  1. Review household demand. We look at hot-water usage, current capacity, fuel, and recovery needs to determine what the home actually requires.
  2. Check the utilities and space. Venting, gas or electrical requirements, drainage, access and available space determine which equipment types are possible.
  3. Remove and install. Our in-house team removes the old unit and completes the water, fuel, vent and safety connections required for the selected equipment.
  4. Test and walk through. We test operation before closeout, then cover temperature settings, routine care and applicable warranty information.
Making the Call

Should You Repair or Replace Your Water Heater?

We compare condition, repair scope, hot-water performance and expected service life rather than recommending replacement for every symptom.

REPAIR CAN MAKE SENSE

A sound tank with a failed component

When the tank itself is intact and the issue is a supported control, burner, heating element or similar part, a repair is often the practical answer.

REPLACEMENT IS THE LIKELY PATH

A leaking tank or compounding problems

When the tank leaks, or major repairs combine with age, corrosion and declining recovery, replacement is usually the better investment.

THE FOUR THINGS WE WEIGH

Every recommendation comes down to these, considered together rather than one at a time.
01 / COST

What the repair costs today

The price of the fix measured against a replacement that also corrects capacity or venting issues.

02 / CONDITION

Tank and connections

Whether the storage tank is sound and what the fittings, valves and venting look like.

03 / PERFORMANCE

Does it still fit the household

Capacity and recovery measured against how the home actually uses hot water today.

04 / LIFESPAN

Expected remaining service life

How many more years the unit can reasonably deliver before the same conversation returns.

Why Homeowners Choose Us

Water-Heating Experience Since the Beginning

Gene’s introduction to the trade included working on boilers and water heaters with his father. Pure Comfort has continued serving water-heating systems since the company was founded in Streamwood in 2008.

  • Long-standing experience
Water heaters have been part of this company's work from the start rather than an occasional add-on service.
  • In-house installers
Our own crews complete the water, fuel, vent and safety connections on your home.
  • Demand evaluated first
We look at venting, combustion, drainage and household demand along with the appliance itself.
  • The right fit, not the same fit
That approach avoids replacing a tank with another unit that does not suit how the home uses hot water.
WHAT WE INSTALL

Compare Standard, Power-Vent and Tankless Options

Conventional tanks offer familiar operation and several capacity choices. Power-vent units can provide different venting flexibility, while tankless systems heat water as it is used.

The right option depends on fuel, vent route, gas or electrical capacity, hot-water demand, space, budget and long-term maintenance expectations.

WHAT WE COMPARE FOR YOU

The equipment decision depends on the home, not the old label.

Water Heaters We Install: Good, Better, Best

We install Bradford White tank water heaters, made in the USA, and Navien condensing tankless water heaters. Here's how the options compare, from a simple tank swap to endless hot water.

Good

Bradford White Atmospheric Tank

The standard natural-draft gas tank. The simplest, most affordable swap when your home already has a chimney or metal vent.

  • 40, 50 and 75 gallon
  • Vents into your existing chimney or flue
  • We stock 40 and 50 gallon for fast replacement
Better

Bradford White Power Vent Tank

A fan pushes exhaust out through PVC pipe, so it can vent out a side wall. Great when the chimney is gone or the furnace no longer shares it.

  • 40, 50 and 75 gallon
  • Sidewall venting with PVC pipe
  • Fixes orphaned-chimney problems
Best

Navien Tankless

Heats water on demand, so you never run out. Ultra-high-efficiency condensing design that frees up floor space.

  • Endless hot water
  • Up to 0.96 UEF efficiency
  • NPE-240A2 has built-in recirculation for faster hot water

Common Questions

Water Heater Installation FAQs

As a rule of thumb:

  • 1 to 2 people: 30 to 40 gallons
  • 3 to 4 people: 40 to 50 gallons
  • 5 or more people: 75 gallons, or a tankless unit

Large soaking tubs or several showers running at once can push you up a size.

Sometimes. Fuel, vent routing, electrical power, drainage and space all need review.

Tankless can be a good fit when flow rate, gas or electrical capacity, venting and maintenance expectations align with the home.

Usually the same day or the next day. We stock Bradford White 40- and 50-gallon water heaters. Most swaps take 2 to 4 hours and include code updates like the expansion tank, gas shut-off and venting.

The correct setting balances comfort, energy use and scald protection. Household needs and local guidance should be considered.

Yes. Water heater projects over $2,000 can be financed with longer terms for a lower monthly payment, subject to credit approval. That includes 75-gallon, power-vent and tankless installations and many 50-gallon replacements.

A standard 40-gallon tank water heater typically costs $1,600 to $2,000 installed, a 50-gallon $1,700 to $2,200 and a 75-gallon $2,700 to $3,300. Power-vent models run $3,200 to $3,800 for 40 gallons, $3,500 to $4,000 for 50 gallons and $4,200 to $5,200 for 75 gallons. Tankless water heaters typically cost $4,500 to $6,500 installed. You get a written price before any work starts.

The brand, gas or electric, and whether you need a slim, tall or short tank all affect the price. So do a new drain pan or ¾-inch main shut-off valve, venting changes, gas piping, and whether the water lines are copper or galvanized.

For power-vent units, replacing an existing power vent costs less than running new vent pipe. For tankless, replacing an existing tankless costs less than mounting a new unit on the wall, repiping and running new venting.

A power-vent water heater typically costs $3,200 to $3,800 installed for 40 gallons, $3,500 to $4,000 for 50 gallons and $4,200 to $5,200 for 75 gallons. Replacing an existing power vent is at the lower end, and running new vent pipe raises the price.

A tankless water heater typically costs $4,500 to $6,500 installed. Replacing an existing tankless unit is at the lower end. Mounting a new unit on the wall, repiping and running new venting and gas piping push the price higher.

Every standard tank installation includes the new Bradford White water heater with a 6-year manufacturer warranty, removal and disposal of the old one, new dielectric unions, a new T&P relief valve and discharge piping to code, reconnection of the gas, vent and water lines, and a new gas shut-off valve, vent connector or drain pan when needed. We finish with a leak test, draft check and full startup and safety check, and Pure Comfort adds a 1-year labor warranty. See the standard tank water heater page for details.

Standard Bradford White tanks carry a 6-year manufacturer warranty on the tank and parts, and power-vent tanks carry a 6-year manufacturer parts warranty. Navien tankless water heaters come with a 15-year heat exchanger warranty and a 5-year parts warranty. Every installation also includes a 1-year labor warranty from Pure Comfort.

Once a year. A tank water heater should be flushed yearly to clear sediment, with the anode rod checked every few years. A tankless water heater should be descaled about once a year, more often with hard water. We can do either during a service visit.
