WORTH CONSIDERING

What Are the Signs Your AC Needs Repair?

The most common signs your AC needs repair are warm air, weak airflow, short cycling, ice on the lines, water leaks, new noises and rising electric bills. Watch for any of these:

  • Warm air or no cooling
The system runs but the house never reaches the setpoint, which can point to electrical, refrigeration or airflow problems.
  • Weak airflow
Little air at the registers can come from the filter, blower, coil or duct system and forces the equipment to work harder for less result.
  • Short or nonstop cyclesAn AC that starts and stops constantly, or never shuts off, is reacting to a condition that needs testing rather than a reset.
  • Ice on the refrigerant lines
Visible ice is a symptom of restricted airflow or a refrigeration problem. Continued operation can damage the compressor.
  • Water near the indoor unit
Condensate that is not draining properly can point to a clogged drain, damaged pan or frozen coil and can cause property damage.
  • New noises or electrical odors
Buzzing, grinding or a burning smell means the system should be shut down and evaluated rather than run through the problem.
Safety first!
Shut the equipment off if it is smoking, repeatedly tripping the breaker or making a sudden loud electrical sound. Continued operation can worsen the damage.
Our Process

How Do We Diagnose AC Problems?

We test the cooling system in the order it actually operates, rather than replacing the first part that looks suspicious.

  1. Start at the thermostat. We confirm the call for cooling and follow the sequence of operation to find where the system stops responding as it should.
  2. Test the electrical side. Capacitors, contactors, motors and connections are checked under real operating conditions, not just visually inspected.
  3. Check refrigeration and airflow. Temperature split, refrigerant conditions, condensate drainage, filter condition and duct restrictions all get measured.
  4. Explain the actual cause. A low-pressure reading or frozen coil is a symptom, not a complete diagnosis. We look for the condition behind it and explain the repair before moving forward.
Making the Call

Should You Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner?

We consider repair cost, condition, history, warranty and expected life rather than making the call on age alone.

REPAIR OFTEN MAKES SENSE

An isolated failure on a dependable system

When the failure is limited and the air conditioner has otherwise been reliable, a repair usually returns the system to normal service at a sensible cost.

REPLACEMENT BECOMES MORE RELEVANT

A major repair alongside other problems

Repeated breakdowns, poor humidity control, an aging refrigerant system or equipment that no longer meets the home’s cooling needs change the long-term math.

The Four Things We Weigh

Every recommendation comes down to these, considered together rather than one at a time.
01 / COST

What the repair costs today

The price of the fix measured against what that same money contributes toward replacement equipment.

02 / CONDITION

The state of the equipment

Repair history, humidity performance, refrigerant type and how the system is holding up as a whole.

03 / WARRANTY

Coverage that is still active

Parts or labor coverage can change the decision considerably, so we confirm what is still in force first.

04 / LIFESPAN

Expected remaining service life

How many more cooling seasons the system can reasonably deliver, and whether the furnace should be coordinated with it.

In Your Neighborhood

Cooling Experience for Streamwood-Area Homes

Local homes range from newer construction to older properties with ducts and electrical systems built under previous standards. We commonly find restricted return air, undersized filters, damaged ductwork or equipment that was replaced without correcting the conditions around it.

That experience helps us separate a straightforward AC repair from a comfort problem that involves the broader system.

Common Questions

AC Repair FAQs

The cause may involve airflow, electrical components, refrigerant conditions, the thermostat or the outdoor unit. Testing identifies where cooling performance is being lost.

Ice can develop from restricted airflow, a dirty filter, blower trouble or a refrigeration problem. Turn the system off and arrange service.

Short cycling can come from controls, electrical components, airflow, sizing or overheating equipment.

In summer, it often points to a clogged drain, damaged pan, frozen coil or condensate issue.

Yes. We service all makes and models of heating and cooling equipment, no matter who installed it. We can also handle manufacturer parts warranty claims for most brands, so if a covered part fails, we file the claim and you pay labor only.

It depends on the failure, condition, repair history, refrigerant, warranty and how well the system still serves the home.

Most AC repairs we do cost $150 to $700. Capacitors, contactors and clogged drain lines are at the low end. Refrigerant leak repair, fan motors and compressor parts cost more. Our diagnostic service call is $75, or $99 on evenings and weekends, with no overtime charges. You get a written price before we start.

Usually yes. R-22 has been out of production since 2020, so recharging an R-22 system is expensive, and replacement often makes more sense. R-410A is still available, but supply is shrinking under the federal HFC phasedown, so its price keeps rising. New systems use R-454B or R-32. For a leaking system, we’ll compare the cost of finding and fixing the leak against replacing the system.

About 12 to 17 years with yearly maintenance. Units that get skipped tune-ups, run with dirty coils, or sit next to a dryer vent or under trees wear out sooner. If yours is past 12 years old and needs a compressor or coil, we’ll show you the repair and replacement prices side by side.
