Streamwood was initially incorporated in 1957, and began to expand rapidly in the 1960s. By the early 1970s, Streamwood had a population of 18,176. As the village grew, it started to become a center for recreation. Hoosier Grove Park, a public space, was purchased to preserve the agricultural history of the region. It was occupied by a dairy farm in the early 1800s. After WWII, many German immigrants settled in Streamwood and worked the land.

Streamwood was home to a tavern along Route 20. It was also the location of a stagecoach line. During this period, young families became active in the community. They protested water and sewer rates.

One of the major draws to Streamwood is the Lords Park Zoo. Featuring a variety of native Illinois animals, including white-tailed deer, ponies, and pigs, the zoo is open to the public. There are also large fenced enclosures for elk, calves, and buffalo.
