Streamwood is a fast growing suburb of the Chicago area. The city is surrounded by lakes, nature preserves and hiking trails. Located just 30 miles from downtown Chicago, Streamwood offers residents access to the Big Apple, while still offering a smaller town feel.

Streamwood was originally incorporated as a village in 1957. New housing developments were created in the 1960s and 1970s, which spurred commercial and industrial growth. However, new housing also brought a new set of challenges. Many new residents faced unpaved streets and inadequate well systems. One of the biggest draws to Streamwood is the Lords Park Zoo. This zoo features a variety of domestic and wild animals. There are ponies, calves, white-tailed deer, and donkeys. Additionally, a large fenced enclosure features a buffalo, elk, and other native Illinois species.

Streamwood is part of the “Tri-Village” area. It is located in Cook County, Illinois. The largest employers in Streamwood are a number of health care providers. In fact, Streamwood has some of the highest-quality medical facilities in the state. The city is also home to the Gail Borden Public Library District.

Streamwood’s median property value was $205,900 at the 2020 census. Homes in Streamwood are a blend of ranch-style homes and executive style homes. Streamwood was a farmland community until the 1950s. After the Korean War, many veterans bought homes in instant subdivisions.

The Village of Streamwood celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2017. In celebration, the Chamber of Commerce and the Streamwood Oaks Golf Course were renamed. Boomers Stadium is also named for the dance of the greater prairie chicken.

Streamwood continues to offer a balanced mix of residential and commercial growth. Streamwood is located in a very diverse area, and has an impressively high proportion of Asian residents. A large percentage of the population is aged 65 or older. Seniors face some of the highest property taxes in the country.
