In the 1950s, Streamwood was a rapidly growing community. Many German immigrants were working the land that is now known as Streamwood. After WWII, farms gave way to suburban development. By 1970, Streamwood’s population had risen to 18,176. New residents often came from Chicago neighborhoods.

In the late 1960s, the village took over the water company, which allowed for expanded growth. The Village Hall and Fire Station were built in 1964. In 1962, Nick Kosan was elected Village President. This marked the end of the control of the government by builders. Here’s more info.

Streamwood was first incorporated as a village on February 9, 1957. Until then, the town was simply Hanover Township. Once the Village had enough residents, it incorporated as a municipality.

With the growth of the community, a new Poplar Creek Library opened in 1970. The Village also purchased Hoosier Grove Park, which had been occupied by a Landmeier dairy farm for nearly 100 years. A new Fire Station was constructed on Cypress Drive. As part of the park, a zoo was established.

The most common type of home in Streamwood is a two-story colonial with clapboard siding. There is also a large selection of ranch-style houses. Streamwood is home to a number of golf courses. Streamwood Oaks Golf Course opened in 1990.

The Lords Park Zoo, located on the southwest edge of Streamwood, features a variety of animals. Calves, donkeys, white-tailed deer, and buffalo are among the many species that call the zoo home. Streamwood also has an award-winning wedding venue called the Hoosier Grove Barn.

Streamwood is located in Cook County, Illinois. The county has an extensive forest preserve, which offers numerous hiking and equestrian trails. Most of the population of Streamwood lives in the northeastern area of the city.

Streamwood is home to eight bank branches, including the JPMorgan Chase Bank, National Association. Other local banks include Bank of America, National Association, and BMO Harris Bank.

The 2010 Streamwood Stride was held on June 2. It included a 10k run/walk and a double derby. This was the 12th Streamwood Stride race.

Streamwood is a very safe community. The violent crime rate is a little more than half that of the national average. Streamwood is also very accessible to big city attractions.
