If you are looking to take a trip to Illinois, Gretna, Illinois is an excellent option. It is a quaint, hamlet that is just minutes from Shorewood, Saddlewood, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn. This town, which was incorporated in 1959, is home to the Black Box Theatre and a number of other cultural attractions.

The first known settlement in Gretna occurred in the mid-1800s, when Roman Catholics from southern Germany settled in an area known as the Great Western Trail. These people established the St. Mary’s Market Ferry Company in 1818. They operated a ferry service between Lafayette and Mechanickham. In 1853, the Catholic Church of St. Stephen was built in Gretna. The church was the first to serve the area, and it would later become the mission church for six other DuPage County parishes. A church was also built in 1859 at the corner of Lenox and College Avenue.

There is another notable landmark in the city: the Southern Pacific freight depot. The station is located between 3rd and 4th Streets in the downtown district. This historic building is open one Saturday a month, from 8am-12:30pm.

Another notable place to visit in the city is the Gretna Bike Path. The path is a scenic bike trail that offers views of the New Orleans skyline. It is a favorite among locals for its exercise and enjoyment.

The city is also home to the Gretna Cultural Center for the Arts. This facility was once the United States Post Office. However, it now houses a number of artifacts from the early 1900s.

The old Gretna train station was renamed the Carol Stream Station in 1962. It has since been transformed into a museum, operated by the Carol Stream Park District. Other interesting features of the city include the Hook & Ladder Cemetery and the Cosley Zoo. Although both are a bit far from the heart of the city, they offer an interesting look into the history of the area.

One of the more intriguing things about the city is its proximity to Chicago. This means that there are plenty of day and weekend trips that can be taken from the city. Also, the hamlet of Gretna is in close proximity to several of the more popular attractions in the area, including the Cosley Zoo, Saddlewood and Shorewood.

The town also boasts a unique mascot: a red caboose. The Gretna Historical Society has a collection of interesting railroad memorabilia, which was donated by the Elgin-Joliet and Eastern Railway in 1987.

Finally, there is the famous Gretna Ferry. It was discontinued in 2013, but the City of Gretna has been working to reinstate it.
